Constipation is a problem that most of us face at one time or another. It is very harmful to our body as it causes a build up of toxins that can result in all sorts of ill health. One can consider himself constipated if he has less than three bowel movements a week, strain to defecate, or his stools are lumpy and hard.

Incorrect eating habits like eating fast foods or unhealthy processed foods do not provide sufficient fiber needed for the movement of fecal matter out of the bowel and this can become compacted with constipation as a result.

Diet containing plenty of green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits are advisable to cure constipation naturally. They provide sufficient roughage to help in the normal evacuation of the bowels.

Role of fruits in treating constipation –

Fruits are rich in fiber content and help to cleanse our colon and prevent constipation. They do not leave any slime residue in the body when eaten except when they have pesticides and preservatives in their outer skin. They do not ferment or putrefy in our colon, as do processed foods, dairy products and meats.

Fruits should be eaten when they are fully ripe. Do not eat them if they are under ripe or overripe. In the under ripe condition they may be acidic and in the overripe condition the many contain more natural sugar.

Fruits helpful in curing constipation are apples, apricots, avocados, blueberries, boysenberries, cantaloupes, cherries, figs and dates, grapes, lemons, papayas, peaches, pears, persimmons, plums, prunes and raspberries.

Using fruits to relieve constipation is a powerful natural remedy. One can eat fruits every day and between meals to get relief from constipation. Apart from these fruits, there are many herbs that are useful in treating constipation naturally. Triphala, an herbal combination of three natural herbs (haritaki, amalaki and bibhitaki in equal proportion) is also found beneficial in treating constipation. It acts as a natural colon cleanser and prevents constipation.

Foods that are high in roughage, bran and fiber are necessary in correcting and preventing constipation. In parts of the world where un-processed grain is used and where large amounts of fiber are consumed, there is little constipation, and passing one or two large, soft stools a day is usual. The following foods are basically used as foods of constipation.

Bran cereals – It is one of the best foods that has a larger amount of fibers and roughage. Therefore it is very useful in constipation.

Vegetables — Root foods like potatoes, carrots, turnips, leafy green vegetables like lettuce, celery, spinach, or cooked high residue like cabbage. These vegetables are very good foods to avoid constipation.

Fruit — Cooked or stewed like prunes, applesauce or fresh fruit (skin and pulp)

Bulking Agents — Fiber is the un-digested part of plant food that passes into the colon. Certain types of fiber can soak up and can hold large sum of water. This, in turn, consequence in a larger, bulkier stool which is soft and easier to pass. Sufficient fiber in food or from supplements is recommended each day. This type of water-retaining fiber in general is easily obtained every day by one of the following:

Food bran — This is obtainable as wheat, oat or rice bran. Processing of wheat and other grains takes away this important fibrous part of the food so these processed products should be avoided.

Psyllium husk — The psyllium plant is outstanding because its ground seeds can retain so much water. This product is obtainable as Metamucil, Konsyl, Effersyllium, Per Diem Fiber, or the less expensive generic preparation in drug and health food stores. Although tagged a laxative, it really is not a laxative.

However, most experts say “let your own organism be your guide” when it comes to drinking certain amount of water.

Conclusion: While curing constipation remember that according to the Institute of Medicine’s Food and Nutrition Board women should consume 91 oz. of water a day from all beverages and food while men need to consume 125 oz. daily.

Constipation is often the result of a poor diet. It is important that you eat a healthy diet that consists of foods that help your digestive system to work properly. It is just as important that you avoid foods that cause constipation. Since constipation is something that can affect anyone, it is important for you to know what foods are beneficial to the prevention and treatment of constipation and what are the foods that cause constipation so that you can limit or avoid the intake of these foods. A Healthy Diet in Constipation It is essential, not only to your overall health, but also in the prevention of constipation that you eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. A healthy diet consists of fresh fruits and vegetable, foods high in fiber, and foods that provide Omega-3 fatty acids. Your healthy lifestyle should also include planning your meals and maintaining a daily schedule for eating. Eating on a schedule will help your digestive system to stay on a regular schedule, which will aid in the prevention of constipation. Foods to Avoid in Constipation There are many types of foods that cause constipation. You should limit or eliminate your intake of these foods in order to prevent the onset of constipation symptoms. While constipation can occur in anyone and is not a serious illness, repeated bouts of constipation can lead to more serious illnesses. Sometimes constipation is a side effect of a medication or illness. If you are taking the medication or suffer from an illness that may involve constipation as a symptom of the illness, you should try to avoid foods that make the risk of constipation higher. Here are some common foods that cause constipation:

MilkCheeseIce CreamChipsPizzaInstant mashed potatoesPastries CakesCookiesFried FoodsProcessed FoodsWheat-based FoodsRed MeatDried Beans In order to help prevent constipation you should avoid or limit your intake of dairy products, foods that are high in fat content, foods that are high in cholesterol content, and processed foods. Prepared meals that come in boxes is one type of food that causes constipation. Overall Health It is important for your overall health to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Avoiding constipation should be a part of your healthy lifestyle. You should learn what foods cause constipation and try to avoid them altogether – or limit your intake of these foods. Maintaining a regular exercise regimen will help build the muscles in your intestines and will allow these muscles to work properly in the digestion of food. Chewing your food slowly and sufficiently will also help in the digestive process. Leading a healthy lifestyle and aiding your digestive system in the natural process of eliminating waste from your body not only helps you to feel better, but can also aid in preventing more serious illnesses that can be caused by repeated bouts of constipation. You should be very careful when it comes to laxatives. Before you begin taking laxatives, you should know the difference between constipation and your body’s natural digestive schedule. Constipation occurs when you have less than 3 bowel movements per week. Remember that not everyone has a bowel movement each day, and in many cases, this is normal. Each person’s body has it’s own individual schedule. If you start taking laxatives in order to make your digestive system perform according to what is normal for other people, you are increasing the chance that your digestive system will become dependent on laxatives in order to process waste from your body. Upsetting the natural process of your digestive system can cause more frequent bouts of constipation, which could lead to more serious illnesses. Being aware of your own body’s natural schedule and learning what foods cause constipation so that you can limit your intake can help in allowing your body to naturally process waste and improve your overall health.

Constipation is a common disorder that causes disturbance in the digestion system. It is a condition in which bowel movements are not proper. And the result is that it gives rise to toxins that get mixed with the blood and are carried to all parts of the body.

Chronic constipation is a problem that in itself becomes a cause of several other diseases like appendicitis, rheumatism, arthritis, high blood pressure, cataract and cancer.

Constipation Relief through Fruit Juice

Apple Juice and Prune Juice – Prepare fresh apple juice for best result in curing constipation. If you have a juicer you can prepare fresh apple juice and drink 3-4 glasses a day. To speed up the laxative effects of apple juice, take the below combination first thing in the morning before you have breakfast,

Step 1 – Drink 2-3 cups of prune juice.

Step 2 – After half hour, drink one cup of apple juice

Step 3 – One hour later drink another cup of apple juice

Now be prepared to head for the bathroom after you drink your prune juice and your first glass of apple juice. You may need to head to the bathroom soon after you drink prune juice.

Prune juice by itself is very beneficial for constipation. It is a safe, gentle and an effective natural laxative. Drink a cup of prune juice in the morning and a cup in the evening. Prune juice contain the substance dihydrophenylisatin, which is responsible for the laxative action.

If you add prune juice to your diet, do not drink as much of it as you would when you have constipation. Drink half glass in the morning and perhaps half glass in the evening.

Home Remedies for Constipation

• Eat guava with seeds, which provides adequate amount of fiber to the diet and aids in normal evacuation of the bowels. Consume about 1-2 guavas on a daily basis. It will prevent constipation.

• Papaya, figs, grapes and orange are natural effective laxatives. They are beneficial in constipation cure.

• You may also consume about four or five dry figs soaked in water overnight. It is another good remedy for constipation.

• Bael fruit is very effective in treating constipation. Consume it everyday for about 2-3 months.

• Another important home remedy for constipation is spinach. You can eat it either raw or prepare its juice. Mix 100 ml spinach juice with an equal quantity of water and drink it twice a day.

As a certified nurse midwife I have treated many cases of pregnancy and hemorrhoids. It was not until I personally experienced hemorrhoids during pregnancy that I understood how painful these little monsters can be.

What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are swollen varicose veins on or around the anus. The veins within the anal canal become swollen because of weakened vein walls allowing blood to pool. This causes the walls of the vein to expand creating the visible ball on the outside of the anus called a hemorrhoid.

What causes pregnancy hemorrhoids?

Pregnancy requires a woman to increase her total blood volume by 40% to accommodate her growing baby nutrition and circulatory needs. This increase in blood volume requires that the pregnant woman’s blood vessels relax and expand to hold the extra blood. This is one of the major reasons why pregnant women are prone to blood clots, varicose veins and hemorrhoids.

Pregnant women are also prone to constipation due to extra fluid absorption and relaxation of the bowels.

Constipation combined with the increased pressure on the rectum and perineum due to the growing baby is another reason for hemorrhoids during pregnancy.

Types of pregnancy hemorrhoids:

Internal hemorrhoids during pregnancy:

You can’t see or feel these hemorrhoids, but straining or irritation from a passing stool can injure a hemorrhoid’s delicate surface and cause it to bleed. You may notice small amounts of bright red blood on your toilet tissue or in the toilet bowl water. Because internal anal membranes lack pain-sensitive nerve fibers, these hemorrhoids usually don’t cause discomfort. Occasionally, straining can push an internal hemorrhoid through the anal opening. If a hemorrhoid remains displaced (prolapsed), it can cause pain and irritation.

External hemorrhoids during pregnancy:

These hemorrhoids tend to be painful. Sometimes blood may pool in an external hemorrhoid and form a clot (thrombus) causing severe pain, swelling and inflammation. When irritated, external hemorrhoids can itch or bleed. The pain of hemorrhoids may be comparable to being stabbed in the rectum by a knife or hot poker.

What can you do to treat hemorrhoids during pregnancy?

The good news is that hemorrhoids usually improve after the baby is born. In the meantime, there are a number of things you can do to treat hemorrhoids. Any one or more of the following may help relieve hemorrhoids during pregnancy:

Take a warm bath with baking soda or place baking soda (wet or dry) on the area to reduce itching.

Use witch hazel to reduce swelling or bleeding.

Use Tucks Medicated Pads.

Avoid sitting or standing for long periods.

Drink plenty of fluids.

Drink prune juice.

Do not delay going to the bathroom.

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

If you are suffering very badly from pregnancy hemorrhoids please consult with your obstetric provider for hemorrhoid medication.

Mangosteen and minerals, 2 ounces twice a day has helped many pregnant women relieve inflammation and pain from hemorrhoids during pregnancy. Mangosteen is a fruit that has been used for hundreds of years as an all natural, pregnancy safe anti-inflammatory and a pain blocker. Mangosteen also supports you body to the demands of pregnancy.

Constipation is one type of condition that you can treat yourself. You can treat constipation in many ways such as using natural remedies or herbal laxatives. But there is always one way to start when you really want to stop your constipation. Using fiber is one of the basic ways that you need to use to treat your constipation. When fiber was discovered, it was first thought that it had no value in health. But, its value was discovered not by doctors but by veterinarians.

Plants or foods rich in fiber have cell membrane structures that are not digestible. It is the fibers in plant walls that help plants keep the structure and strength. Dietary fiber consists of carbohydrates where their polysaccharides were arranged in different fashions. The four basic fibers are cellulose, pectin, hemicellulose, and lignin. Cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin are considered insoluble fiber. Pectin, gum, and mucilage are considered soluble fiber.

Besides helping to provide constipation health soluble fiber provides the following benefits.

“ reduces risk of heart disease
“ reduces risk of gallstones formation
“ helps to remove toxic heavy metals and toxins from your colon
“ helps to prevent appendicitis
“ regulates movement of sugar into the bloodstream during digestion
“ helps to prevent fissures
“ lowers cholesterol
“ slows absorption of fats in the intestines
“ and most importantly, help prevent the overgrowth of bad bacteria in your colon.
“
Eating insoluble fiber will give you natural constipation relief. What makes insoluble fiber so beneficial is that it does not dissolve in water or during digestion. Since your body’s enzymes do not breakdown fiber, like it does food, it remains in tack as it travels through your intestines and colon. But one thing about eating an excess of fiber is that you could get stomach bloating caused by the breakdown of fiber.

Dietary insoluble fiber helps fecal matter travel faster through the small intestine, colon, and rectum. It provides bulk and weight to your fecal matter. It makes your stools larger, softer, and stimulates peristaltic movement as it moves through your colon. When you lack fiber, your stools are thin, narrow, and short and dry. This is the condition that causes constipation.

Insoluble fiber, like soluble fiber, slows down digestion. It also slows down absorption of protein, starch and fat and has the ability to inhibit the action of digestive enzymes. It also prevents the re-absorption of estrogen, cholesterol, and toxins.

Here are some of the foods that you need to eat if you want to treat your constipation. Use vegetables, wheat, and wheat bran. This type of fiber is considered an anti-carcinogen and a digestive aid. It is credited with preventing colon cancer and colon diseases.

Here is a list of good Insoluble fiber:

“ Bananas
“ Broccoli
“ Brown rice
“ Brussels sprouts
“ Cauliflower
“ Cabbage
“ Corn
“ Lentils
“ Potatoes
“ Spinach wheat germ
“ Whole wheat bread
“ Whole wheat crackers

Here are some other foods that you can use to get natural constipation relief:

Oranges, grapefruit, nectarines, peaches, tangerines, apples, berries, apricots, bananas, figs, prunes

Zucchini, turnips, okra, cabbage, peas, sweet potatoes
Carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, corn, eggplant, okra, Zucchini, greens

Barley, chickpeas, split peas, pinto beans, kidney beans, navy beans, potatoes

Foods rich in fiber contain both soluble and insoluble fiber. Some foods contain more of one than the other. Dietary fiber is a necessity for a disease free life. Without eating fiber food, constipation set in, then disease comes. Many people who develop illnesses don’t eat the required amount of fiber foods. Start now to increase your consumption of fiber foods. Start treating constipation now.

Using juices is an excellent way to deal with constipation. Carrot juice for constipation relief can be a powerful way to deal with bowel movement problems. Carrot juices contain certain oils that work on the mucus membranes of the stomach and colon. This helps with digestion and starts your bowels functioning properly. Carrots are high in fiber and beta-carotene, an antioxidant, which the body converts to vitamin A. Carrots can make your stools softer and larger.

Why are larger stools better? Because larger stools dilute toxins, exposure less toxins to colon walls, and press against colon walls to promote peristaltic action. Large stools are better provided they are not hard. Carrot juice will soften large stools.

Drink carrot juice twice daily for constipation relief, once in the morning and in the evening before bedtime. Using fresh pressed carrot juice will give you better results.

You can drink more carrot juice if you like. Its action on the body produces enormous benefits since it contains a good number of vitamins and minerals – B, C, D, E, K, carotene, sodium, and potassium. These nutrients help to clean out your colon and speed up fecal matter movement.

As you increase the carrot juice you drink, chances are you will feel a little uncomfortable or nausea. This happens when carrot juice reaches your stomach, intestines, and colon and begins stirring up toxic layers in that area. This feeling will pass as you remove toxins and is its nothing to worry about.

If you are pregnant, drink carrot juice daily to build up your breast milk and to provide your baby with the nutrients that it needs

Carrot Juice, Carrots and Celery

Another effective constipation remedy is to use carrot juice with other vegetables that are high in fiber and that have laxative effects.

Celery is high in fiber, potassium, sodium, and many other minerals. It can reduces inflammation and protect against cancer. Celery has a chemical call polyacetylene, which reduces prostaglandins that cause inflammation.

Celery has a calming effect on the nervous system. If you have been using laxatives, which have overworked your colon nerves, celery will help to relax these nerves and give them a rest.

Adding carrot juice to celery juice provides an even better nutritional drink which helps to eliminate constipation. This drink will help to restore nerve function in your colon and improve its health.

Celery has the highest content of organic sodium. This sodium is used throughout the body as lymph saline liquid allowing cells to work, live, and regenerate properly.

Celery is also beneficial for the stomach. The stomach lining is called a sodium organ because the stomach walls are filled with sodium, which prevents the formation of ulcers.

Here’s what to do,

To get the best constipation relief, eat carrots and celery as snacks during the day and for your salads; drink a glass of carrot juice in the morning and one in afternoon. By eating slightly steamed carrots you can increase the carotene available from the carrot by up to 4 times. However, by cooking carrots, you destroy the enzymes that will help you to digest them quickly and completely. Vary your carrot juice by adding celery juice to it.

Boost your carrot juice by juicing with it a few stalks of celery which includes the leaves. The leaves have more nutrients than the stalk and are part of the nutritional value of the celery. This combination is an excellent constipation remedy.

How long Will This Take?

Getting food from our mouths to our stomach, digesting it and then emptying our colon is something we humans spend a lot of time doing. When we suffer from constipation that whole process can seem like an eternity. Have you ever wondered how long the whole process takes?

Since we eat different foods at different times and come in all shapes and sizes, the average transit times (like commuting to and from work!) are only estimates scientists have reached, when studying digestion.

The estimates are that it takes about 21/2 to 3 hours for the stomach to be at least 50% emptied, with total emptying times about 4-5 hours. Then there is the small intestine transit time of another 2-3 hours, with colon transit times between 30 and 40 minutes.

It would be impossible to get exact transit times because food doesn’t move through the digestive process all together. Foods don’t always get processed in the same order as they came in- some of the food from the same meal will be in the colon, while another portion remains in the stomach.

A meal is a mixture of several types of chemicals and materials. It’s a miracle the body knows what to do with everything, but it does. Sometimes the choices we make will effect the transit time unpleasantly, and that can mean problems with constipation. One of the best foods to get the journey back on track is fruit. Enjoying at least two fruits a day can keep the transit police happy. (Is that the sound of happy people’s toilet’s flushing?)

Top Ten Fruits

Fruits are made by nature- a perfect food. They are easy to digest and absorb. Fruits are your colon’s friends. If you ever suffer from constipation, you’ll want to reach for fresh fruit. Here’s a look at the top ten fruits that help improve constipation.

Fruits offer many health benefits, including providing vitamins and nutrients, but this list have added benefits for sluggish bowels. Can you guess what these fruits pack a punch with? Did you answer fiber? Thought so!

These fruits are packed full of fiber. Let’s take dried figs. 5 figs will supply 237 calories, with 8.5 grams of fiber for every 100 of those calories. One cup of raspberries, at 60 calories will help get things moving with 8 grams of fiber.

Most of us have already been told how fiber is so good for us. It’s great to know that you don’t have to down bowl after bowl of bran to get rid of constipation. In fact, if you aren’t used to a lot of fiber in the diet, it can make you feel bloated, gassy and more uncomfortable than being constipated did in the first place.

More Fruits to the Rescue

Don’t worry if the fiber-rich fruits on the top ten lists don’t appeal to you. Most fruits are naturals at gently relieving constipation. Here’s a list of other fruits you might want to add to your diet:

ApricotsBlueberriesBoysenberriesCantaloupesCherriesDatesGrapesPeachesPlums

The combination of fiber (which is usually provided by the skin, so don’t peel that apple!) and sugars that are harder for the body to digest, makes fruits a good bet for clearing bouts of constipation. Since the body can’t break down the sugar, it pushes it out. You might say that fruit are nature’s laxative. They also act as toners to the stomach and intestines.

Other Transit tips

Need some other suggestions to get traffic flowing again? First of all, if you’ve suffered from constipation for a while and it doesn’t seem to be getting better, it may be something more than just a nuisance. It’s wise to have it checked out by your physician. Here are some other tips for relieving constipation:

It’s not only what you eat; it’s how you are eating. Be sure that you are not rushing to eat meals and eating at odd times. Make sure you chew your food. Digestion starts in the mouth. Saliva has enzymes that work chemically on your food before you even swallow. Each mouthful should be chewed at least 15 times. Stay away from foods that contain white flour and sugar. Drink lots of water- just not with your meals, as it dilutes gastric juices needed for digestion. A cup of hot water with some lemon can help with constipation.

You’ll find that making a conscious effort to add fruits to your diet will make a lasting difference in helping you avoid constipation.
